6.1.3. Software Update

6.1.3.1. Requirements

  1. A binary software file with the .hex extension provided by AGCO Power Inc.
  2. A reliable CAN bus connection with the ECU.
  3. A power supply to the engine ECU while the engine is not running.

6.1.3.2. Software update procedure

  1. Open the connection, if it is not already open.
  2. Save the error log to a file for later use. (1)
  3. Press the Update ECU Software button, and the file selection dialogue opens.
  4. Select the correct software file for the engine.
  5. Start the update.
  6. After the software is updated, the connection will be opened again and you can continue with other tasks.

(1) The internal structure of an error log may be different in an updated software version and the ECU internal error log is erased automatically after the software update.

If the software update fails, you can try the following means:

  • Verify that you are using the most recent version of the Service Tool, and that you have up-to-date CAN interface drivers installed. For the PCAN-USB see the section Installing instructions for PCAN-USB drivers.
  • Check the CAN interface and the vehicle CAN bus cables for possible damages.
  • Restart the software update from the Service Tool
  • Switch the ignition off for at least 2 minutes. Then switch it back on and restart the software update.
  • Switch the ignition off for at least 20 minutes, and then disconnect the vehicle battery for 5 minutes. Then connect the battery and the ignition in this order again and restart the software update. Please note that the battery main switch may not work properly when the engine controller software update has failed, and you may need to disconnect the wires from the battery. Alternatively, you can disconnect the plugs from the EEM4 controller.
  • If none of the above worked, you may need to disconnect one or more other controllers from the CAN bus if they interfere with the software update.
